Matte, Semi-Gloss and Glossy Paper: What Is the Difference?
A practical comparison of paper finishes for reports, presentations, photographs and display work.
Matte paper
Matte paper has very little reflection. Text is easy to read under varied lighting, fingerprints are less obvious and the finish suits reports, booklets and presentations.
Semi-gloss paper
Semi-gloss balances colour depth with lower glare than a high-gloss finish. It suits images that need good colour while remaining easier to view from different angles.
Glossy paper
Glossy paper provides strong colour and a highly reflective surface. It can suit photographic and promotional work, although glare and fingerprints may be more noticeable.
The best finish depends on the viewing environment, handling and purpose.
